Almost any company that produces a product has something that is usually called ‘a milestone product’. For Kaspersky Lab this was Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0.

Released back in 2006, it was a tremendous success that catapulted Kaspersky Lab to a global leader in the anti-malware market. It would be too bold to call Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 the best product in the world, but multiple magazines and independent tests did exactly that.

The road to the success was not, by any means, easy. Back in 2002, Kaspersky Lab released Anti-Virus 4.0 and found itself between a hammer and an anvil. At that time Microsoft has just released Windows XP; an average PC’s CPU was barely packed with 1GHz of a processing punch. On the other hand, new threats ran rampant and had to be dealt with and the way Anti-Virus 4.0 did it took its toll on a PC’s performance. It was then that ‘Kaspersky is slow’ became a common expression in the IT world.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 proved to be such a failure that it was never released at all. Instead Kaspersky Lab started building a new product from scratch…
